Take a look at the exhibit on this site. These Bosphorus painters worked from 1650 - 1910 travelling to the Orient and painting portraits that provide a visual history of that time period. After viewing the museum exhibit comment on the following: Which group of portraits were your favourite? What do you think inspired the artists to paint them? What did you learn from the paintings about the culture?

My favorite group of portraits was "Portraying Ottoman Society". I loved the way the artist used the Used the different brush strokes and colours. The artist was inspired by the way all the captures dressed. I really liked these pieces.

I learned that in there culture the wore very flashy and elegant clothing. The Paintings all used very bright vibrant colors. The portraits were all very realistic.

Sultans and portraits is my favourite. The clothing that was worn is very exotic and greatly verys from person to person (very different from todays clothing), the colours are either very bright or very dark each showing that whomever is wearing it is very powerful (a sultan). I think that people wanted to paint them because they are a different culture. Unique and interesting with fancy clothes makes for a great portrait.
